The Problem with Perfection

August 26, 2003

Jesus says we are to "Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect."

But when I try to be perfect, I do something, and redo it, and .... My perfectionism often leads to failure instead of perfection.

Oops! As James says, "One who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin."

However, instead of "make everyone and everything around you perfect," Jesus finished His sentence with "...as your Heavenly Father is perfect." We can imitate God's attributes, at least those that are attainable by human beings.

Perfection is both possible and natural when we are filled with the Holy Spirit. After all, "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control."

Next question: How do we get the Holy Spirit to fill us? Finally, we've found something that's easy. He WANTS to fill us, and all we have to do is ask.

Holy Spirit, fill me right NOW!
